The Stunning Serengeti

The Serengeti was really a beautifully stunning place that met all our expectations and more ... We pitched up at the gate at 4pm with 150km to go to our Grumeti campsite ... just in, the dusty road stretched before us ..

Before even a few kilometres Candace spotted this ... and then a big maned male lion.

Just twenty minutes and two pythons from camp we came across two young male lions that had just made a kill, we must have just missed it because their flanks were still heaving and they had not yet broken the skin of the buffalo. We watched for an hour or so until their mouths were bloodied and then we headed to camp.

In the morning we headed back to the kill to find only a rib cage left ... and plenty of vultures.

The Grumeti camps site was sparse but lovely and we could hear lions roaring.

Right next to camp the Grumeti flowed over the backs of hippos ..

... and enormous crocodiles, while lilac breasted rollers kept watch.

Baboons sunned themselves on a fallen log ...

.. and Marty and Candace tried to keep up with it all.

Fish eagle and hippos on the Grumeti.

Then we headed up Lobo way in the North and boy was that amazing. Here are some of the views ...

Marty in a silly hat, Aimee stalking giraffes and thousands of wildebeest.

Birds galore ...

Dark skies that threatened rain (only light patters) and gusty winds. Marty and Kev had a hard time getting the fire lit that night!

Secretary bird, starling, agama and vulture.

Giraffe, klip-springer and tea on a roack looking out over the Lobo Hills in North Eastern Serengeti.

Topi, Giraffe, Elephant .. and hold on .. yes that`s Aimee!

We never did get to see the wildebeest in full river crossing but we saw them crossing little streams ...

Vultures and a Kori Bustard.

Sunrise and the famous Serengeti balloon safari .. we weren`t on it!

Klip-springer on rock at sunset.

Lions, lions and more lions ...

Having fun on the Grumeti River up near Klein`s Gate. We saw a leopard just after this but it was too quick to photograph. It was in fact a mother and cub but both disappeared quickly.

Our second camp, where we spent two nights in Lobo was utterly fantastic. We camped amongst a herd of over 400 wildebeest who grunted all night long on the first night. On the second we had a clever warthog in camp who had clicked that he was safe with us as all night the lions roared nearby!

The Lobo Hills from camp and collecting firewood.
